Riyadh: 11 people, including two key officials of the Saudi Arabian embassy in Bangladesh, were arrested on charges of fraud and corruption in the issuance of work visas.

According to the international news agency, among those arrested are the head of the consular section of the Saudi Embassy in Bangladesh Abdullah Al-Shammari and his deputy Khalid Nasir Al-Qatani, 2 officials of the Ministry of Interior, 8 Bangladeshis, and an investor.

The two officials of the Saudi embassy in Bangladesh are accused of taking $14.4 million (54 million Saudi riyals) in bribes in exchange for issuing work visas while working at the embassy.

5.38 million worth of gold and vehicles were found during the raids from the houses of the people involved in the fraud while the remaining amount was invested abroad.

Saudi Arabia’s anti-corruption agency had been working on work visa corruption for several months and after collecting evidence, arrested the accused, who have expressed their determination to be severely punished.
