The Supreme Court of Pakistan, while hearing the case against the appointment of judges in Gilgit-Baltistan, stopped the Prime Minister from appointing judges in Gilgit-Baltistan.

A 2-member bench headed by Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan conducted the hearing.

The court issued a restraining order on the appointments pending the decision of the case.

Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan has approached the Supreme Court against the appointment of judges.

The federal government asked for more time to respond.

The Additional Attorney General requested the court to grant one week’s respite.

Justice Mazahir Naqvi inquired whether the Chief Minister’s advice is necessary in the appointment of judges.

Justice Ijazul Hassan said that even if there are no appointments for a couple of weeks, nothing will happen.

The Supreme Court issued a notice to the judges appointed in the GB Supreme Appellate Court through the Registrar.

Justice Ijazul Hassan said that the judges have taken charge, the legal status of giving notice to them will be determined at the next hearing.

Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi said that it would not be appropriate to give notice to the judges.

Justice Ijazul Hassan asked who appoints judges in Gilgit-Baltistan?

The Additional Attorney General said that the judges are appointed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

The court adjourned further hearing till March 15.
