Buenos Aires: At least 65 people have died and 760 people have been left homeless due to heavy rains, floods and landslides in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
According to the latest report by Brazilian media, the death toll was 54 yesterday. The municipality of São Sebastião recorded 53 deaths.
Brazilian media reported on Saturday that the death toll had reached 59. The search and rescue operation has been going on for seven days, involving more than 150 experts.
Flooding and landslides last weekend displaced more than 760 people in the area and the death toll has risen to 65, according to Sao Paulo officials.
1730 were evacuated from the affected areas. Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio Gómez de Freitas has declared a state of emergency in several municipalities. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday expressed deep sorrow and regret to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva over the floods in Sao Paulo.
