London: A new study warns that xylitol, a chemical used for artificial sweeteners, may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
According to media reports, a study published in the ‘European Heart Journal’ has shown that high blood xylitol levels increase the risk of heart attack, stroke or other heart problems within three years.
The aforementioned research has been brought to the fore after the analysis of more than 3000 people in America and Europe.
In a laboratory study, researchers discovered that xylitol causes platelets to clot, which also increases the risk of blood clots.
Note that xylitol is a zero-calorie artificial sweetener commonly used in sugar-free toffees, chewing gum, baking items and toothpaste.
