London: Fish oil supplements are considered an excellent source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, but a recent study suggests that this is not entirely true.

According to media reports, a study published in the journal BML Medicine suggests that regular use of fish oil supplements may increase the risk of stroke and irregular heartbeat even in people with good heart health.

Dr. Andrew Freeman, a cardiologist and director of cardiovascular disease prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health, said fish oil is rarely recommended and is not well documented in professional medical guidelines. However, most people still use it.

The research analyzed data from 415,000 people aged 40 to 69 in the UK who took fish oil supplements regularly for 12 years.

The researchers found that in people with good heart health, regular use of fish oil supplements had a 13 percent higher risk of irregular heartbeats and a 5 percent lower risk of stroke.
