Karachi: Traders of the city’s wholesale market closed their shops in Jodia Bazaar in protest, rejecting the prices of grocery items issued by the Karachi Commissioner.

According to Express News, the shops and warehouses of Jodia Bazar, the country’s largest commodity market, were closed in protest on Thursday afternoon, before the Karachi Wholesale Grocers Association had raised an objection to the price list of Commissioner Karachi.

Traders said that in the official price list issued by the Commissioner Karachi for Ramadan, the price of sugar and pulses has been set lower than the wholesale price.

He said that there is a difference of 25 to 40 rupees in pulses and 13 rupees in the price of sugar. It is impossible to sell at this price. On the other hand, if you sell at the market price, you will face raids and fines. Businesses are closing.

According to the chairman of Wholesale Grocers Association, Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, pulses have become expensive due to the expensive dollar, while the Commissioner Karachi has set the price of pulses as low as 30 to 40 rupees.

He said that sugar mills are selling sugar at Rs 135 per mill but Commissioner Karachi has fixed the price of sugar at Rs 123.

Abdul Rauf Ibrahim said that if the government wants to reduce inflation, it should curb the dollar and supply sugar at a lower price than sugar mills.
