Newly elected members took oath in Sindh Assembly session, opposition protested

People’s Party has nominated Owais Qadir Shah and MQM has nominated Sofia Shah for the Speaker Sindh Assembly

Karachi: In the Sindh Assembly session, the newly elected members took oath while the opposition protested strongly outside the House.

A meeting of the Sindh Assembly was held under the chairmanship of Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani in which the newly elected members took the oath of membership. 147 members took oath, including 111 members of PPP and 36 members of MQM. The House consists of 168 members, of which 130 are general, 29 are reserved for women and 9 are reserved for minorities.

On the other hand, the workers of the opposition parties crossed the barriers and entered the red zone. Women were also included in the protestors. The protesters marched forward shouting slogans but the police stopped them from moving towards the Sindh Assembly and detained several people.

The members of Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), PTI today announced not to take oath and peaceful protest outside the assembly.

People’s Party’s Owais Qadir Shah and MQM’s Sofia Shah submitted their papers for the Speaker Sindh Assembly. Naveed Anthony of People’s Party and Rashid Shah of MQM have also submitted their papers for Deputy Speaker. The Speaker and Deputy Speaker are expected to be elected on Sunday and the Leader of the House is expected to be elected on Monday.

Speaking to the media, Speaker Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani said that people have rejected those who protested outside the assembly. Instead of protesting outside the assembly, these people should go to the election tribunal.

The Election Commission has issued the notification of the success of 163 members of the Sindh Assembly, in which 27 seats are for women and 8 seats for minorities. Notification of two seats will not be issued as one member of the assembly passed away and Hafiz Naeemur Rehman announced to vacate the assembly seat.

PPP is the largest parliamentary party with 114 seats and MQM is the second largest with 36 members. GDA 3, Jamaat-e-Islami 1 and 9 independent members are also part of the House. The decision to join the PTI-backed independent members in the Sunni Ittehad Council could not be made.

It should be noted that 60 members of the Sindh Assembly are becoming part of the House for the first time. Her Ismail Soho is the only woman member who has been elected for the fifth consecutive term. Qaim Ali Shah, who was elected for the eighth time, has also been a member of the Local Government, National Assembly and Senate.
