California: Elon Musk, the owner of Neuralink, says that the first person in whose brain the company implanted a chip made a full recovery. and can control a computer mouse with his mind.
Elon Musk said at a Space event on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that the patient has apparently made a full recovery with neurological effects. The patient can only move the mouse on the screen while thinking.
Elon Musk said that Neuralink is now working on making clicking possible for the patient.
After receiving approval for human trials last year, Neuralink successfully implanted a ‘telepathy’ chip in the brain of a patient (whose identity has not been disclosed) last month.
Neuralink’s technology uses a robot to surgically implant a brain-computer interface in the part of the brain that controls movement intent.
The system consists of a computer chip attached to thin flexible threads that are connected to the brain by a robot.
Robots remove a small part of the scalp, attach the chip’s thread-like electrodes to a specific part of the brain, stitch the part of the scalp, and finally leave only a scar where the skin was cut.
Elon Musk said that the procedure is done within 30 minutes and does not require general anesthesia while the patient is sent home the same day.
