Payment of tourist tax while shopping, officials explain

RIYADH: Officials have issued an explanation regarding the refund of the tax paid by tourists coming from abroad during shopping in Saudi Arabia.

According to Urdu News, the Tax, Customs and Zakat Authority in Saudi Arabia says that at present, Value Added Tax (VAT) cannot be refunded to tourists coming to the Kingdom, the refund of VAT will be subject to Article No. 73 of the law. .

The Customs and Tax Authority explained the clause number 73 of the law and said that the authority is not bound to return the tax collected on the purchase here to the tourists coming to the kingdom.

According to the provisions of the law, one or more service providers should be appointed by the authority to receive the case of the tourists and demand the return of VAT to the authority on their behalf.

It will be the responsibility of the authority to issue a list of institutions providing such service.

Clause 73 of the Act further states that tourists who are not residents of GCC countries may submit their case to the designated service provider for refund of value added tax.

These tourists must also prove that the goods they have purchased will not be used in the Kingdom or the GCC, but will be taken home.

The tourist must be present in the Kingdom while submitting the VAT refund request, it will be the responsibility of the service provider to forward the case to the authority after studying the case thoroughly so that approval can be issued from there.

The authority further said that after receiving the case, in case of approval of refund of value added tax, the amount will be transferred to the same service provider through which the case was submitted. He will be entitled to charge his prescribed fee from the refund amount.

The Authority shall have the right to reject the case received in whole or in part, in case of return of the case the case shall be forwarded to the concerned agent by whom the case was submitted to the Authority.
