The use of cinnamon is useful in preventing diabetes

Los Angeles: A study has shown that consuming cinnamon twice a day with meals can help two to four people at risk of diabetes to avoid the disease.

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles found in a study that people in the pre-diabetic stage could significantly lower their blood sugar levels if they consumed a teaspoon of cinnamon.

In the prediabetes stage, blood sugar levels are higher than healthy levels, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

High blood sugar increases the risk of a number of potentially fatal complications, including heart disease and serious infections.

For the study, scientists selected 18 overweight or obese people who were in the pre-diabetes stage. The subjects were put on a diet rich in simple carbohydrates and restricted from eating vegetables for a month.

Half of the study participants were given placebo capsules twice a day, while the other half were given a capsule containing a teaspoon of cinnamon.

The researchers found that people who ate the cinnamon capsules had significantly lower blood sugar levels and less spikes in glucose than those who ate a placebo.
