Karachi: The fire safety audit of 266 buildings in the city revealed alarming revelations.
According to the report submitted to Mayor Karachi, fire audit of 266 buildings on three main highways of Karachi was conducted. These highways include II Chandragarh Road, Shahrah Quaideen and Shahrah Faisal. Out of 266 buildings, only 6 buildings have fire fighters.
The report said that more than 200 buildings have fire extinguishers or other equipment. 62% of buildings have no emergency exit. In 70% of the buildings, the electrical wiring system is very substandard.
According to the report, 90 percent of the buildings do not have fire alarms and smoke detectors. These buildings include residential and commercial buildings where thousands of citizens either work or live.
In the report, Mayor Karachi has been requested to ban the entry of non-essential rescue agencies at the fire site as they cause difficulties in rescue operations.
The report has also recommended Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners to assist the fire brigade at the scene of fire. It should be noted that Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab had issued orders to conduct a fire safety audit of high-rise buildings in the city after a series of fire incidents in Karachi.
