California: Instant messaging application WhatsApp is going to introduce a new feature to add another dimension to users’ privacy. This feature will protect the IP address of users during a WhatsApp call and prevent their location from being revealed.
Under this feature, all the calls of the users will be connected through the WhatsApp server instead of being connected directly. Which means that the user’s IP will not be visible to the person who is receiving the call.
Group calls already go through a server under WhatsApp’s default settings, so users will have to go into settings and turn on this option to hide IP during individual calls.
Users can choose Protect IP Address in Calls option by going to Privacy in Settings and Advanced option. The same procedure has to be used to turn off the option.
On the other hand, WhatsApp further informed that the call quality will be affected after turning on the new feature. The quality of the call will decrease as it goes through the WhatsApp server. But all calls made will be end-to-end encrypted so no one can listen to them.
