London: Cervical cancer patients who receive early treatment before standard treatment are less likely to die from the disease by a third, a study has found.
Chemoradiation (giving chemotherapy at the same time as radiotherapy) has been the standard treatment since 1999, but despite improved techniques, the cancer has a 30 percent chance of recurrence.
A team of researchers from University College London recruited 500 patients for a 10-year trial. All these people were suffering from cervical cancer. In them, the cancer was so severe that it could be seen without a microscope, but it had not spread.
Every patient in the study received standard chemoradiation, but some also received induction chemotherapy beforehand.
This aggressive treatment (in which drugs try to kill as many cancer cells as possible), which adds to the benefits of chemoradiation, has been associated with certain risks that may not be suitable for everyone. .
But the study’s initial analysis (after five years) found that 80 percent of patients who received both treatments were alive, and 73 percent did not see the cancer return or spread. 100% survived, while 65% did not see the cancer return or spread.
According to the study’s lead researcher Dr. Mary McCormack, the results of the study show that short-term additional chemotherapy given immediately before standard CRT can reduce the chance of the cancer returning or dying from it by up to 35 percent. . This is the biggest improvement in the disease in 20 years.
