Karachi: An Automatic Weather Station (AWS) has been installed at Port Qasim by the Meteorological Department It will be activated in a few days. It will be possible to measure wind speed, direction, humidity while rain will be possible, the number of AWS in the city will be 4, in the next phase, 2 more automatic weather stations will be installed at Hub and Manora.
Three automatic weather stations are already functioning in the city by the Meteorological Department, of which 2 are installed at Jinnah Terminal. Through these stations, aircraft arriving and departing the airport are informed about the weather conditions, while a third automatic weather station is installed at the Met Complex.
The AWS installed at Port Qasim is the fourth system in this series, through which temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity ratio and rainfall can be measured simultaneously.
According to the Meteorological Department, 2 more automatic weather stations will be installed at Manorah and Hub. The automatic weather station is a modern and digital version of the traditional (ana log) weather platform. The main reason for its installation is to enable timely weather measurements from remote areas. It does not require human hands, but all these steps are automated.
In addition to the data logger, rechargeable battery, telemeter and solar panel, it has other sensors including anemometer, wind vane, hygrometer, barometer to measure the wind speed. In addition to the solar panel and a rechargeable battery, this system requires electrical energy. While another objective of its installation is to obtain weather conditions in remote places without any human hand. The data received from the automatic weather station can be made part of the record.
According to Chief Meteorologist Karachi Sardar Sarfraz, after the installation of automatic weather station at Port Qasim, the weather conditions on several kilometers of coastline will be known in a better way. Through this weather station, the weather of the entire coastline of the east, while through the weather station of Manora, the complete information about the coastline of the west. Details will be available. The new automatic weather station will also be helpful for fishermen and other vessels going out to sea for fishing.
