Twelfth day of Pakistan Theater Festival, Tribute to Minto

On the twelfth day of the ongoing Pakistan Theater Festival in Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, Ajuka Theater Group paid homage to Saadat Hasan Manto through the theater play ‘Kun Hai Yeh Gastakh’.

The theater play “Koon Hai Yeh Gastakh” was presented in Urdu language by Ajuka Theater Group at Arts Council Karachi to pay homage to renowned writer and dramatist Saadat Hasan Manto.

At the beginning of the theater, President Arts Council Mohammad Ahmad Shah and writer Shahid Nadeem expressed their views.

Muhammad Ahmad Shah said that we are paying homage to our people in which we want to include big people. Today’s theater is the result of Shahid Nadeem’s tireless efforts.

He further said that outside Pakistan and all his life he worked together with his team, our real heroes are these people.

In recognition of the services, the President Arts Council gave a shield and presented flowers to the writer and director Shahid Nadeem.

On this occasion, Shahid Nadeem expressed himself and said that Ahmed Shah is a cultural magician, Shah Sahib is providing the best opportunities for the promotion of art and culture, Minto was our role model and a great storyteller, this game is a tribute to Minto. The drama covers the life of Minto.

The cast of the drama includes Usman Raj, M Qaiser, Usman Zia, Kamran Mujahid, Bilal Mughal, Shahzad Sadiq, Rizwan Riaz, Hafia Mudassar, Usman Chaudhry and Uzma Hasan.

Written by Shahid Nadeem and directed by Madiha Gohar, the film ‘Koon Hai Yeh Gastakh’ was first produced in 2012 on the occasion of Saadat Hasan Manto’s birth centenary.

The play focuses on Minto’s life, work and events after his migration to Pakistan in 1948.

Minto migrated due to family pressure and frustration with Hindu-Muslim tensions in Bombay, which adversely affected the environment of the Bombay film industry.

The play begins with Minto’s journey from India to Pakistan, his impressions of the horrific communal riots reflected in his writings on Partition, Minto’s stories ‘Khuda Ki Qasim’, ‘Khol Do’, ‘Kul Sware Jo Ankh Meri Khali’, ‘Licence’, ‘Uncle Sam Ko Khat’, ‘Thanda Gosh’ and ‘Toba’ were dramatized while the play ended with a powerful poetic tribute to Majeed Amjad’s Manto, ‘Koon Hai Yeh’.
