Sherman Obeid established Pakistan's first digital 'Museum of Food'


Sherman Obaid Chinoy has established Pakistan’s first ‘Museum of Food’ in collaboration with Google Arts and Culture and the British Council.

It is a digital hub that highlights Pakistan’s exciting and diverse culinary scene.

Pakistan’s ‘Museum of Food’ is the largest and most comprehensive resource for exploring Pakistani cuisine online.

This museum has more than 9000 photos, more than 90 videos and more than 100 stories of dishes from all provinces of Pakistan.

The museum has been developed with unusual culinary techniques provided by immigrants.

The aim of the project is to preserve and appreciate the culture and heritage of Pakistani cuisine, as well as to document the dynamic evolution and progress.

In this regard, the project director, two-time Oscar winner Sherman Obaid Chinoy, said that culinary heritage in Pakistan is a fundamental part of the country’s cultural identity.

He said that due to the challenges posed by the passing of several generations and climate change, certain home practices and traditional cuisines have become highly threatened.

He said that keeping in mind the threats facing Pakistani cuisine, we have embarked on a mission to not only reminisce about the old flavors but also to appreciate our past and actively preserve the endangered techniques and customs. But should be protected and alive.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy said, “We hope that this project will inspire people to explore, appreciate and enjoy the vibrant culture, history and cooking methods of Pakistani cuisine, with their own part in this narrative.” Will encourage contributions of stories and recipes.

We hope that users of Pakistan will be fully immersed in the many wonders of this amazing country through our largest digital hub developed in close collaboration with Sherman Obaid Chinoy and the British Council.

This collaboration was made possible through our Gender Ecologies Grant Program which addresses the interconnectedness of women, climate change and the arts. Food cultures provide us with deep knowledge about people’s customs, agricultural traditions, climatic conditions and their flora and fauna. They also have a direct impact on our health, the health of our planet and our understanding of ourselves. We hope that this ‘Museum of Food’ will serve as a platform to collect these practices, share them and explore the stories that come with them.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy and his team, in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture, have explored popular dishes in the provinces from their origins, capturing the essence of Pakistan’s culinary and cultural diversity. From the mouth-watering seafood of Gwadar to the Sohan halwa of Multan and the innovative inclusion of wild ox meat in Hunza, travels to different regions of Pakistan to illustrate how detailed geography, the nation’s cuisine, Adapts to specific patterns.

Sherman and his fellow filmmakers visited a large number of eateries across the country to capture the essence of traditional food practices and trace the significant impact of modernity on the country’s evolving taste palate.
