Hearing in NEPRA on the request to increase the price of electricity to Rs 10.32 per unit for Karachi

Karachi: Preparations are being made to make electricity more expensive for the people of Karachi, in this regard, the hearing on the request to increase the price to 10 rupees 32 paise per unit is ongoing in Nepra.

The application for quarterly adjustment has been filed by the federal government, seeking an increase in various quarterly adjustments for 2022-23. The hearing has started in Nepra on the government’s request to increase the price of electricity.

According to Nepra officials, an increase of 47 paise has been requested in the quarterly adjustment for October to December 2022. Under the quarterly adjustment for July-September 2022, an increase of Rs 4.45 per unit has been sought, while for April, May and June, Rs 5.46 paise has also been requested. Adjustments have been received from other Discos users.

After the tariff adjustment, there is an increase of over Rs.8. By including the adjustment for industries, the rate per unit will be Rs 37 to Rs 47, while the increase in tariff for industry alone will be net of taxes.

During the hearing, Ministry of Energy officials said that from September to October, 3 rupees 21 paise was requested. An increase of 47 paise per unit was requested from September to November. An increase of 3 rupees 55 paisa has been asked from October to March 2024. A hearing has already been held on an increase of one rupee 52 paisa in the form of surcharge from October to September. By October 2022, a lower tariff of around Rs 11 has been applied to an electric consumer. The collections which have been made earlier from the consumers of discos are now to be made from KE.

It was inquired from the side of Nepra that the industry will run with such an increase in the tariff. Working in Nepra was presented by CPPA, on which the authority questioned which consumers are getting less burden in terms of this working?

Nepra member Sindh asked that how many people are there whose bill will be up to 3 thousand rupees in the month of August? You should not do this, the issue of bills is being discussed all over Pakistan. The CEO of Discos has also been summoned over over-billing and other complaints.

Chairman Nepra said that the request for increase in various adjustments has been received. People are told that the authority has increased the electricity prices. The impact on the economy will affect the consumers informed on the tariff. Electricity price increase is done after hearing your application not Nepra.

The NEPRA authority said that simply stating through a general outline that protected consumers will not be affected is not enough.
