Weight gain in middle age can increase the chance of death

Amsterdam: A new study suggests that weight gain in middle age (40s or 50s) can increase the risk of death by up to 30 percent.

The study found that people who had high blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar and weight were up to 30 percent more likely to die at an early age.

According to experts, these unhealthy traits can put people at risk of heart attack or stroke in the next 30 years.

Worryingly, most people go unnoticed and continue to feel healthy, unaware of the underlying problem.

In the study, researchers wanted to see whether asymptomatic middle-aged people with diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity (also known as metabolic syndrome) were more likely to die from cardiovascular disease. .

About 34,000 people between the ages of 40 and 50 were studied in the research. The men participated in a cardiovascular screening program in Sweden from 1990 to 1999. The study measured height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose and waist circumference.

According to the findings presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Amsterdam, the average time to the first non-fatal heart attack or stroke in the metabolic syndrome group was 16.8 years, compared to 2.3 years in the control group. The difference was 19.1 years.
