Climate change is changing the color of the oceans

According to a new study, there has been a clear change in the color of the ocean in the last 20 years and the possible reason for this is being attributed to climate change caused by human activities. A team of researchers from the United Kingdom’s National Oceanography Center and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States say that the color of more than 56 percent of the world’s oceans has changed, which cannot be called a natural change. Tropical oceans, which are closer to the equator, have changed color over the last two decades.

This change also reflects the change within their environment. The color of the ocean actually comes from the material on its top layer. For example, deep blue oceans contain very limited life, while green means there is an ecosystem based on phytoplankton (plant-like microbes that contain chlorophyll). These phytoplankton form the base of the food web, providing food for krill, fish, waterfowl and marine mammals.

Stephanie Dutkiewicz, who led the study, says it’s not clear how the ecosystem is changing. All these changes are disturbing the balance of the natural order of the environment. If the temperature of our oceans continues to rise, this imbalance will worsen over time.
