The world's first nuclear test, radiation effects reached 46 US states

Nevada: In July 1945, 46 US states were affected by the radiation effects of the Manhattan Project nuclear explosion.

According to American media, the July 1945 nuclear test, codenamed ‘Trenty’, was the country’s first nuclear test, and radiation effects reached Mexico and Canada within days of the explosion.

Researchers who examined the results of nuclear tests in New Mexico and Nevada from 1945 to 1962 found that more than 101 nuclear weapons tests were conducted in the United States that caused environmental pollution and exposed people to radiation in the affected states.

The research was led by Sebastian Philipp, a scientist at Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security. Philip said in an interview with the New York Times that this is a very important research.

Referring to the research, he said that there were 101 nuclear experiments but the time and scope were limited to fully understand the radiation effects. Similarly, physicists and doctors underestimated the reach of nuclear explosions, and there was no national system in place to track such things.

Furthermore, the Trinity test, which is said to have contained an explosive material equivalent to about 24.8 kilotons of TNT, did not include in its legislation a possible exposure to the explosion and an assessment of its effects and scope.
