Karachi: The Urdu dictionary board is suffering from severe shortage of manpower of various grades, only 14 people are working on 55 posts while only one specialist is available to work on Urdu dictionary.

It has been revealed that 41 of the 55 posts of the Urdu Dictionary Board are vacant, only 14 people are working on these posts, one person among the experts is working as a dictionary on the posts of scholars, all the other people are office workers of different grades.

No steps have been taken yet for recruitment by the federal government, no serious and concrete steps have been taken to introduce the national language at official and office level under Article 251 of the 1973 Constitution.

Director General Dr. Rashid Hameed while talking to Express said that the lack of manpower assigned to professional responsibilities in this building is a sign that one person is doing the work of three people. The building was reopened to keep it functional again. “Urdu Dictionary (Dictionary) Board” is a government organization and consists of 22 volumes and thousands of pages.

He said that famous and valuable personalities of literature like Farhan Fatehpuri, Jameel Jalbi laid the foundation of this building in 1985. As we see it disappearing, we are determined that this institution must survive.

According to Rashid Hameed, the decision to merge these institutions into the federal government was not a proper step. In the restructuring, the size of the institution and the number of employees will be reduced even more, then the required experts will not be available at the time of need. .

He said that generally, people give the opinion that the dictionary was created in 22 volumes, so what is the need now, while in comparison, if you examine the Oxford dictionary, it is getting wider than its previous volume, languages are alive. In the languages, the old words are modified, the dictionary for different levels of matric inter-students should come out of it and there is a need to prepare Ghalib Mir’s Farangit so that the breadth of words can be better understood, this process also needs to be revised. It is because the priorities become better with new resources and research. Another important and fundamental problem is that the building is functional but without people, the building has no status. It is necessary that the required people play their role so that the students Interest also increased.

He further said that the Urdu Dictionary Board, as the field office of the National Language Development Institute, will remain active for dictionary writing, under the auspices of the Adviser to the Prime Minister and the National Heritage and Culture Division to bring the Urdu dictionary in line with modern requirements. And all possible measures will be taken with the help of cooperation.
