Islamabad: For the first time, the National Cancer Registry under the National Institutes of Health (NIH). A comprehensive report based on data and statistics has been released.
According to the report, 269,707 cancer cases were examined in the country between 2015 and 2019. Among them, the number of men is 46.7 percent and the number of women is slightly higher i.e. 53.61 percent.
According to the province-wise distribution, 45.13 percent of the cases were from Punjab, 26.83 percent of patients from Sindh, 16.46 percent from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 3.52 percent from Balochistan. Surprisingly, breast cancer was the most common among men, followed by oral, colon, liver and lung cancers, respectively.
In terms of numbers, mouth, liver, colon, lung and prostate cancers were found to be the most common among men, respectively. Cancers of the breast, ovary, mouth, cervix, and colon were common in women.

Breast cancer is most common in young women and women up to 30 years of age are suffering from it. Then, due to the absence of a comprehensive diagnostic program for this cancer, social pressure, not informing the loved ones in time, this disease comes out at the last stage. This disease is proving fatal for women in Pakistan.
Oral cancer is the leading cause of cancer in men and unlike breast cancer, oral cancer is much easier to diagnose and has a prevalence of 75% in men in the country.
Oral cancer is spreading rapidly due to smoking, paan, gutka, chalia, snuff, lack of awareness about oral hygiene, lack of knowledge about hygiene rules. Snuff use is common in Karachi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Similarly, another major life-threatening cancer, liver cancer, can also be prevented with preventive measures.
After being diagnosed with liver cancer, patients die within months instead of years because of the high prevalence of hepatitis B and C in Pakistan. This further complicates liver health. However, the country has also seen a rapid increase in the rate of colon cancer. This is because there have been significant changes in dietary habits in the last three decades which are negative.
Fast food, junk food and sugary drinks cannot be ignored in colon cancer.
On the other hand, lung cancer is also becoming a major cause of death due to smoking and use of smokeless tobacco. But its rate has been decreasing.
The research includes data from Karachi Cancer Registry, Punjab Cancer Registry, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Nishtar Medical Hospital in Multan and Al Shafa Hospital in Islamabad.
