Employees can suffer from loneliness and insomnia due to artificial intelligence

Athens, Georgia: Employees who work with artificial intelligence are more likely to suffer from loneliness and insomnia, according to a new study.

Artificial intelligence commonly used in the marketing, finance and manufacturing industries can have detrimental effects on the private lives of the employees who work with them, researchers have found in a study.

The team, led by researchers from the University of Georgia, conducted four experiments in the United States, Taiwan, Indonesia and Malaysia.

In one study, 166 engineers working with artificial intelligence systems at a Taiwanese biomedical company were surveyed for three weeks about their feelings of loneliness, fear of separation from loved ones, and sense of belonging to society.

Those who worked with the participants reported their helpful behavior and their families reported their insomnia and drinking after work.

The analysis revealed that employees who interacted with artificial intelligence systems the most were more likely to experience loneliness, insomnia and increased drinking after work.

According to the team, the research also revealed that these employees were willing to help their fellow employees.

Other experiments conducted on employees of property management companies and technology companies in the United States, Indonesia, and Malaysia yielded similar results.

The lead researcher of the study, Pok Man Teng, used to work at an investment bank, where he used artificial intelligence, which led to his attention to this problem.

He said that the rapid innovation in artificial intelligence is creating a new industrial revolution that is changing the shape of the workplace, which has many benefits but can also pose many mental and physical risks to employees.
