Advisory continues due to fear of Congo outbreak

Karachi: The Sindh Health Department has issued an advisory to all District Health Officers and Medical Superintendents for the prevention and control of Crema-Congo.

According to the advisory, in view of the recent reported cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), the risk of further disease transmission and the expected increase in CCHF cases during the upcoming Eid al-Adha, to remain alert and There is an urgent need to take measures against it.

The advisory states that CCHF is a fatal viral disease, its transmission is through a neurovirus. The virus is present on the skin of various domestic animals such as cattle, goats, and sheep. The mode of transmission from animal to human is tick. It is possible from the infected blood of the animal during or immediately after the bite, slaughter.

In this regard you are requested to take precautionary measures to control CCHF and reduce the risk of infection in the community and control the spread of CCHF in the health care setting. In the past, serious outbreaks have occurred during the handling of CCHF patients. Hospitals should take appropriate precautions including allocation of separate wards or beds for infected cases, standard infection control practices by health workers. These include handling suspected or confirmed cases of CCHF through the use of hand hygiene, gloves, personal protective equipment (PPES) and safe disposal of hazardous waste.

The advisory states that there is an urgent need to set up camps in cattle markets and to sensitize the community through banners and posters to take necessary preventive measures against the spread of CCHF, focal persons for CCHF in their respective institutions.
