Copenhagen: A new study has found that a combination of proteins and antioxidants doubles the anti-inflammatory properties in immune cells.
Coffee consumed on a daily basis is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols that reduce inflammation. Inflammation is part of the body’s immune system that identifies and eliminates an external interference and initiates the healing process.
However, chronic inflammation increases the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and rheumatoid arthritis.
New research shows that consuming foods rich in polyphenols along with foods rich in amino acids (the building block of protein) makes antioxidants more effective at reducing inflammation.
Because polyphenols interact with other molecules such as amino acids, little research has been done. To find out, researchers at the University of Copenhagen subjected immune cells to artificial inflammation.
Some cells were given different doses of polyphenols plus amino acids (such as coffee with milk) while others were given doses of only polyphenols (such as black coffee). While a control group was not given any food.
The study found that immune cells that were given a combination of the two ingredients to reduce inflammation had significantly less inflammation than those given a diet containing only polyphenols.
In a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers reported that a combination of protein and antioxidants doubles the anti-inflammatory properties in immune cells.
The researchers said the results of the study suggest that drinking coffee with milk has anti-inflammatory effects. Milk is rich in proteins and contains all nine amino acids that are essential for humans.
The head of the research, Professor Marianne Nissen, said that the matter will be looked at in more depth by researching animals.
