Kuwait’s ambassador to the US, Jassim Al-Badawi, has been appointed as the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Organization (GCC).
Naif Al-Hajraf’s term as Secretary General will be completed today, he assumed the post on February 1 last year.
Jassim al-Dawi will take over as Secretary General on Wednesday, having started his career in 1992 at the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He was appointed diplomatic attache in the office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.
Jassim Al-Badawi was appointed to the US Embassy in Kuwait in June 2001, promoted to Secretary in 2004, Consul in 2007 and Deputy Chief of Mission in October 2011.
From 2013 to 2016, he served as the Kuwaiti ambassador to Korea, until last year he was also the ambassador to Belgium and head of mission to NATO, and later was appointed ambassador to the United States.
At the annual summit of the Gulf Cooperation Organization in Riyadh, all member states agreed that the post of Secretary General will remain with Kuwait for the second time in a row.
Jassim Al-Badawi is the third GCC Secretary General from Kuwait.
Abdullah Yaqub Bashara of Kuwait was the first and longest-serving Secretary General of the GCC, holding the post for 11 years.
