At least 17 people were killed in a fire at a fuel storage station of Indonesia’s state-owned energy company Pertamina.
According to a foreign news agency, a fire broke out in a fuel storage in Jakarta after 8 pm.
Some houses were also burnt due to the fire and panic spread among the citizens living nearby, the citizens packed their belongings and ran away from their houses.
The fire was extinguished at 10:30 am, said a Pratmina spokesperson.
Although the fire in the fuel storage was extinguished, the fire in the nearby houses was not controlled.
According to the fire fighting unit, two children are also among the dead, while 50 people, including a child, are seriously injured.
The governor of Jakarta said that the government will bear the cost of treating the injured.
In the video released on social media, it can be seen that the sounds of explosions were heard as soon as the fire broke out.
Jakarta’s central fire station said 51 trucks were dispatched to fight the fire.
The company says fuel supply to the city will not be affected as fuel will be supplied from other terminals.
The CEO of the company apologized for the fire and said that he will look into the internal affairs carefully to avoid such accidents in the future.
The fuel station that caught fire has a storage capacity of 3 lakh liters of fuel.
