Extreme power loadshedding and blackouts threaten civil war

South Africa is on the brink of disaster, with worst-ever power loadshedding and blackouts threatening civil war.

According to foreign media reports, the embassies of Western countries, including the US and Australia, have issued instructions to their citizens to store food and water for several days.

The embassies have further instructed citizens to remain vigilant during extended blackouts.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of emergency on February 9 in response to the worst power shortage.

State-owned energy company Eskom Institute is carrying out load shedding for more than 12 hours in the name of ‘load shedding’.

There is constant load shedding across the country affecting residential areas, businesses, street lights, traffic lights and hotels.

The blackouts are also affecting water supply, internet access, mobile phone signals, fuel supply and security issues in residential areas and food supply.

The Australian embassy said in its guidelines that loadshedding would lead to an increase in crime, such as looting from vehicles stuck in traffic jams.

The US embassy this month instructed its citizens to keep three days of rations and other items at home and to stock non-perishable food, three liters of water per person, medicine and medical supplies.

Eskom and South African officials also met with the US Overseas Security Advisory Council.

Eskom says it will take 6 to 14 days to shut down and restart the power grid.

The US official said that if the electricity was completely cut off, there would be widespread looting, and there could even be a civil war.
