Karachi: The administration of University of Karachi has started preparations for starting medical education and establishing its own medical and dental college of the university and a working note has been prepared for its formal approval which will be submitted to the Syndicate meeting. A meeting of the Syndicate of University of Karachi is being held on Friday, in which there is a national possibility of approving the establishment of a new Medical and Dental College and Teaching Hospital of University of Karachi.

All the government and private medical colleges of Karachi were affiliated to University of Karachi until about 10 years ago, but due to the non-fulfillment of the conditions of PMDC at that time, the government of Sindh affiliated all the medical colleges to University of Karachi and Jinnah Sindh Medical University. was moved.

During the tenure of former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Qaiser, the conditions for the establishment of a teaching hospital and the university’s own medical college could not be fulfilled, nor could the implementation of this notification be stopped, while other Vice-Chancellors who came later did not make any progress. Couldn’t.

According to University of Karachi Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Iraqi, currently there is a hospital in the University of Karachi premises and functioning, which also has an OPD.

He said that under the immediate conditions of PMC, we can also declare this hospital as a teaching hospital, but for this, the initial condition of 200 beds has to be fulfilled, while government hospitals from Sindh and city governments are also required. Declaring it as a teaching hospital and clinical practice of students can be discussed.

In the introductory working paper presented by Vice Chancellor University of Karachi to the Syndicate regarding Medical and Dental College and Teaching Hospital of Karachi University, it is said that University of Karachi is already offering graduation admissions in Physiotherapy and Pharmacy. While other departments of life sciences including physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology and genetics are also active in the university, however, hospitals are required for clinical research in these departments as well.

The working note further states that the university has the infrastructure in this regard, so establishing a medical college and hospital here can help meet the public health needs of the city and the province.

It has been mentioned that the administrative, financial and examination infrastructure required in this regard is already in place, including Registrar’s Office, Department of Examinations, Finance and Semester Sales, Transport, Security and required land.

In the paper presented for approval, it is said that the funds required for the establishment of a new medical college and teaching hospital will remain limited in the current resources, while it may be possible to pay the salaries of teachers in some new fields from student tuition fees and With the same infrastructure, the university is able to start this project in near future.

The working note states that discussions will be held with the provincial and federal governments for private and public hospitals for clinical training of students in order to meet the requirements of the Pakistan Medical Council (PMC).
