As the spectre of an impending general election loom over the United Kingdom in the latter half of 2024. The political arena is abuzz with speculation about the fate of the ruling Conservative party, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Recent polls indicate a significant lag behind the main opposition, the Labour Party. It raised questions about Sunak’s leadership and the Conservatives’ electoral prospects.

A YouGov survey was published by The Telegraph earlier this month, based on responses from approximately 14,000 individuals. It forecasted a potential landslide victory for Labour, projecting a substantial gain of 385 parliamentary seats. In contrast, the Conservatives are anticipated to retain only 169 seats. It will be a more pronounced setback than the party experienced in 1997.

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Professor Tim Bale, a politics expert from Queen Mary University of London, shed light on the challenges facing Prime Minister Sunak and the evolving dynamics of the UK’s political landscape.

Bale commented on Sunak’s management of foreign policy amidst multiple crises. Like the bid to deport refugees to Rwanda and global conflicts such as the Ukraine war and Israel’s actions in Gaza. Bale acknowledged Sunak’s competence. He noted that the Prime Minister’s influence is compromised by uncertainties surrounding his political future, both domestically and internationally.

Bale addressed a concerns from British Muslims and pro-Palestinian Britons about the lack of fervent calls for a Gaza ceasefire by the major parties. He asserted that this issue might not significantly impact the Conservative vote. Because of the traditionally low support from this demographic for Palestine issue. He emphasized the multifaceted considerations. He said that voters, including those with Islamic faith, weigh, encompassing economic challenges and the cost-of-living crisis.

Moving forward, Bale outlined Sunak’s priorities for the new year, including addressing the asylum-seeker situation, economic concerns, and the struggling National Health Service. He also highlighted the potential influence of the upcoming US election and Donald Trump’s endorsement on the UK’s political landscape.

Regarding the election forecasts, Bale expressed skepticism about the Conservatives’ chances. Bale cited Sunak’s unpopularity, economic challenges, and healthcare issues. He acknowledged Labour’s substantial task of winning a considerable number of seats for a majority. Bale deemed a victory feasible, cautioning against exaggerated predictions of a landslide.

Bale analyzed the trends among voters who traditionally supported Labour but switched to the Conservatives in the 2019 election. He noted that the Conservative Party had lost support in these areas, attributing it to factors such as the fading impact of Brexit and growing concerns about the economy and healthcare.

Looking toward a potential Labour government led by Keir Starmer, Bale highlighted the cautious campaign, anticipating a more radical approach to governance. He also discussed the potential impact on European politics. Bale is of the view that the impact will offer a hope to those favoring center-left governments in a European political landscape leaning right.

As the interview concluded, Bale touched on the urgency of addressing the climate crisis in the election discourse. Even though it might take a backseat to immediate economic concerns. He emphasized the need for long-term thinking in the face of pressing global challenges.

To surmise, the interview provided a comprehensive analysis of the current political scenario in the UK. Balancing academic insights with accessible language for a broader audience.
