Room heaters are devices used to heat a small enclosed space such as a room or office. These come in different types such as electric heaters, oil heaters, gas heaters or infrared heaters.
Although using heaters in cold weather has its own fun and provides benefits to some extent, it also has negative health effects which are as follows.
1) Dryness: Room heaters cause dryness in the air which can result in dry skin, eyes and throat.
2) Carbon monoxide poisoning: Heaters powered by poor quality fuel can release carbon monoxide gas which can cause carbon monoxide poisoning if inhaled in large quantities. Its symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, and in severe cases, it can be life-threatening.
3) Overheating: If room heaters are not used or maintained properly, they can emit excess heat, creating a fire hazard.
4) Allergies and Asthma: Room heaters can activate dust mites, pet dander, and other airborne allergens. It can trigger allergic reactions and make asthma symptoms worse.
5) Eye and skin irritation: Prolonged exposure to dryness and hot air from room heaters can cause eye and skin irritation.
6) Pollution: Some types of room heaters such as kerosene or gas heaters can emit pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide into the air. Inhalation of these gases can cause respiratory problems.
