Depression common among caregivers of stroke patients

Michigan, USA: A recent study found that stress or depression conditions are common among stroke caregivers.

A study published in Neurology found that nearly 30 percent of stroke caregivers experience stress and emotional problems during the first year after the patient is discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Lewis Morgenstern, professor of neurology, neurosurgery and emergency medicine at Michigan Medical School, said depression, anxiety and stress are especially common among family members who make life and death decisions for their terminally ill loved ones.

He added that as doctors we usually focus on our patients while we should also focus on the health of the patients’ caregivers.
