Cleveland: Can diabetes and weight loss medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound also reduce the risk of colon cancer? According to new research. . .Yes!
A new study by researchers at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, USA, published in the journal JAMA Oncology, found that people with diabetes who also took one of the above medications, such as metformin or insulin, , they were found to be less likely to develop colon cancer than others.
“To our knowledge, this is the first indication that weight loss and antidiabetic drugs reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer,” said Rong Zhou, a professor at Case Western School of Medicine and co-lead author of the study.
In the study, Rong Zhu and another co-lead author, Dr. Nathan Berger, tracked the results of 1.2 million people with diabetes whose medical records were stored in a national database. All were treated with some form of diabetes medication between 2005 and 2019, after which they were found to have a reduced risk of colorectal cancer.
