Newcastle: A new study has found that making certain lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of cancer.

The validity of lifestyle recommendations made by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and the American Institute for Research (AICR) in a study conducted by researchers at the University of Newcastle, UK. was reviewed.

Other recommendations set by the institute include eating no more than 500g of red meat (such as beef or mutton) a week, getting two-and-a-half hours of exercise per week, avoiding sugary drinks and maintaining a healthy weight.

The researchers tested these suggestions in the study on data from 94,778 British people with an average age of 56.

The data included details on the individuals’ diet and exercise, as well as body mass index (BMI) and waist measurements.

Each individual’s data was evaluated against seven propositions. Cancer registry data were also used for cancer diagnoses during the eight-year study.

Data more consistent with the recommendations in the study were found to be associated with reduced cancer risks. Participants who followed the recommendation reduced their risk of cancer by up to seven percent.
