The results of a study have revealed that the life expectancy of American men has decreased by 6 years compared to women since Covid.
A new study by medical experts has found that the difference in life expectancy between men and women in the US has widened since Covid-19 compared to the last 30 years.
According to research published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, the gap in life expectancy between men and women has widened the most since 1996, with Covid-19 and drug abuse as the most important causes.
Earlier in 2021, it was stated in the government data that according to the study conducted at that time, the life expectancy of women was 79.3 years while that of men was 73.5 years. The experts said in their research results that the life expectancy of Americans has been decreasing continuously since 2019, which has decreased from 78.8 years in 2020 to 77.0 years and further decreased to 76.1 years in 2021.
Dr. Brandon Yan (University of California, San Francisco), author of the study, expressed concern over the research findings in a statement to the New York Times, saying that the trend of continued decline in life expectancy is disturbing. “We need to keep a close eye on which age group people are experiencing a decline in life expectancy, so that the gap can be narrowed,” he said.
Explaining the reasons for the widening gap in life expectancy between men and women, Dr. Yan said that the whole issue has to focus on men’s deteriorating mental health.
Researchers have also listed diabetes, heart disease, depression, suicide and alcoholism among the reasons for the widening gap in life expectancy between men and women.
