Karachi: Customs, while taking action at Jinnah Terminal Arrival, foiled an attempt to smuggle goods worth more than Rs 1 crore and detained a female passenger named Saima Ali.
Collector Jinnah Terminal Collector Shafiq Ladki told Express that the female passenger who arrived in Karachi by flight QR 610 from the US to Qatar was trying to leave the green channel and was stopped by the Customs officials on the basis of suspicion.
When the woman’s belongings were scanned, iPhones, MacBooks, gaming laptops, vitamins, ladies branded shoes, handbags were identified. The authorities seized the luggage and detained the female passenger.
He said that the total value of seized items is Rs 1 crore 40 lakhs and duty taxes worth Rs 50 lakhs are applicable on these seized items. Action against the female passenger under the Customs Act and further investigation is underway.
Customs officials say that due to strict anti-smuggling measures at the airport, smugglers are adopting new methods and trying to smuggle passengers by luring them with attractive incentives.
Authorities requested travelers from abroad to avoid bringing any belongings belonging to unrelated persons with them on their return home to avoid possible severe legal action.
