88 government colleges of Karachi, which take a budget of billions of rupees, are declared non-standard

Karachi: Out of the 153 government colleges in Karachi, which received billions of rupees in annual budget during the previous democratic government, 55 percent of them have been declared substandard by the caretaker provincial government of Sindh and 88 government colleges have been given the third-class category.

These figures have been released by the Provincial Department of College Education itself after a surprise inspection of several government colleges by the Caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh and classifying the government colleges of Sindh including Karachi in three different categories “A, B and C”. has been divided.

A category government colleges are considered as third level colleges due to “lack of teachers, worst infrastructure, poor sanitation, lack of scientific equipment in laboratories and non-purchase of books in the library” among other factors.

“B” category colleges are slightly better than A category, and due to better educational facilities, remaining government colleges are placed in “C” category, however, the Department of College Education has named these three categories of colleges as “Zones”.

This has been revealed in the letter issued by the Department of College Education regarding the inspection of colleges on an emergency basis, the inspection of government colleges is being started on the instructions of the caretaker Chief Minister Sindh

Regional Director Colleges Karachi Prof. Suleiman Syal, who has the additional charge of Director General Colleges Sindh, has also confirmed this classification of Sirkai colleges.

When contacted by “Express”, RD Colleges Karachi said that on the orders of the Viceroy of Sindh, we have started visiting the colleges, the inspection of the colleges is being done and instructions are being issued there to solve the problems that can be solved immediately. There are some problems that cannot be solved immediately.

On the question of “Express” that what are the problems that are faced by the colleges and they do not have an immediate solution, while what are the problems with the colleges that have been placed in the category of Zone A, to which Sulaiman Syal said that these colleges have different There are no facilities of any kind.

In most of them there is severe lack of sanitation, in some laboratories are not functional, in some there are library problems while in some there is also shortage of teachers, however the shortage of teachers has been controlled up to 70% but there is shortage of lower grade staff in colleges. And because of the ban on recruitment, new recruitments are not possible.

To a question, he said that the common problem in all colleges is the attendance of students. He claimed that he has inspected about 50 colleges so far and students are absent from most of the colleges.

It should be noted that according to the document issued regarding the three different classifications of colleges in the context of the meeting held at the Chief Minister’s House, inspection of each of the 88 government colleges of Karachi with Zone A category has been declared mandatory twice a month. It has been given while Zone B colleges have to have one inspection every three months and Zone C colleges have to have one inspection every three months.

In this regard, the 88 government colleges of Karachi which have been given substandard category Yazone A due to lack of facilities include Superior Commerce College, Jamia Millia Government Degree College Morning/Evening, Government Islamia Arts and Commerce College Morning, Government City College, Siraj-ud-Daula College, Shipowner College, Premier Government College, Riyaz Government College, Government Girls College Ulnoor, Dakhtar-e-Sharq Government Girls College and many other famous colleges are included while many colleges of Landhi and Korangi are also included in the same category.

It should be noted that despite the worst situation of its educational institutions, the Department of College Education wants to start BS program in government colleges due to a court order and in this regard, a draft policy of a BS 4-year program has also been issued recently. But the facts on the ground are quite the opposite.

In this regard, “Express” contacted University of Karachi’s Secretary Affiliation Professor Dr. Nila Ambar Malik and asked her why Karachi University has so far only allowed two-degree colleges to start BS four-year program.

In response to this question, he said that these two colleges are Khursheed Girls College and Government College of Commerce and Economics, where the situation was slightly better, but his team, on the request of the relevant educational institutions, Ship Owner College, Abdullah Girls College, DJ Science College and Saeedabad College. Dr. Anila Amber further said that we have sent letters to the Directorate of College Education Department to inform about this situation, the biggest shortage in government colleges is teachers, librarians and library books.

Meanwhile, a teacher of Islamia College for Arts and Commerce, an educational institution of category A zone, told “Express” that since the transfer from the old place, the department has not discovered anything about the condition of the college, the college is in a bad condition with no furniture. Equally, there are no books in the library and students do not even come to study.
