Oregon: The ancient Chinese martial art of tai chi may reduce the risk of dementia, according to a new study.
Scientists from the Oregon Research Institute in the United States conducted a study on more than 200 people over 65 years of age with a weakening memory problem. In the study, participants were asked to complete a virtual tai chi program.
After five-and-a-half months, the subjects were given a series of tests to measure their memory, orientation, sleep quality and depression, and the results were compared with the group that was asked to do the stretching exercises. was
People who did a specific type of tai chi (which involves holding specific positions while saying words and phrases to improve flexibility and balance) saw a three-fold improvement in their mental abilities compared to the stretching group. However, in a follow-up test taken one year later, this improvement continued.
Commenting on the study published in the International Journal of Medicine, the researchers said that the results of the study suggest that regular exercise has the potential to reduce the risk of dementia.
He added that the magnitude of improvement seen in the research suggests that tai chi can slow down or reverse the decline in brain function over several years and maintain brain function.
