Conducting a 3-day workshop on 'Journalism for Peace'

Lahore: A 3-day workshop was organized on the topic of Peace Journalism in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities of Farman Christian College University Lahore and Oslo Metropolitan University.

The event was inaugurated by Dean Dr Altafullah Khan while Chairperson Department of Mass Communication Dr Frost Jabeen signed the Memorandum of Understanding for ICA Regional Conference on Climate Communication.

On the first day of the workshop, “Reporting in the age of social media and various topics related to it” was discussed, in which senior journalist and anchor person Ajmal Jami spoke about the sensation on social media “from hashtags to headlines”. Gave a critical review on the quality. Dr Sawira Shami presented her critical perspective on the possibilities of peace in digital media journalism.

Professor Elisabeth Ide of Oslo Met University, Norway, described the historical background of media coverage of the conflict. He said that in the process of journalism in war zones, differentiation is preferred over harmony and extremism is preferred instead of dialogue and discussion. Khalid Khattak, founder of Data Stories, informed the participants about the survival of journalists in the clickbait culture and the challenges facing accurate journalism in this competitive era.

On the second day of the workshop, personalities active in the field of journalism expressed their views on the subject in the light of their experience, in which Tarhab Asghar from BBC, Zain Aamir Senior Producer from New News, Bureau Chief Hum News Shiraz Hasnat participated. .

Dr. Alexandra Wake from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology participated via video link and discussed the Western background of journalists’ survival in a social media dominated age.

On the third day of the workshop, Dr. Ayesha Ashfaq discussed the process of peace building through development journalism. Dr. Anam Muzamal and Asma Bisharat spoke on the impact of technology and artificial intelligence on journalism. The Chairperson of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Kohat University, Dr. Rehmanullah, expressed his views on the ethics of reporting serious accidents in journalism for peace.

At the end of the 3-day workshop, a certificate distribution ceremony was also organized for the participants.
