Diet, health and sleep are closely related. Therefore, even a small change in diet can have serious negative effects on both sleep and health.
Experts have identified five foods that can have extremely harmful effects on health if eaten before going to bed.
Those foods are as follows:
Chocolate
Eating caffeine-rich chocolate at night can be extremely harmful. Caffeine, which causes rapid eye movements, can make you feel more tired after waking up in the morning. Apart from chocolate, other caffeinated products such as coffee, tea and energy drinks should also be avoided before going to bed.
Dry fruits
Moderate consumption of fiber-rich dry fruits is very beneficial, but eating them at night can cause stomach aches and gas.
Cheese
Eating cheese before going to bed can be very bad for your health. Many types of sharp and aged cheeses contain amino acids that keep us awake and alert.
Sweet foods
Sweet foods like ice cream, cakes and sweets cause a sudden spike in blood sugar. This sudden surge alerts the adrenals by signaling an emergency, which in turn increases cortisol levels and wakes the body from sleep.
tomato
Acidic foods like tomatoes should also be avoided before going to bed. These foods can cause reflux problems (stomach acid refluxing back up into the throat) when lying down.
