Karachi: The Sindh High Court has expressed concern over the increasing cases of rape in the province.

A 2-member bench headed by Acting Justice Irfan Saadat Khan of the Sindh High Court heard a petition for the implementation of the Anti-Rape Trial and Investigation Act 2021 related to the incidents of gang-rape and sexual abuse of girls in Sindh.

The Sindh High Court issued a written response to the Federal Ministry of Law and Justice, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and the Sindh Home Department and others on the application for the implementation of the Anti-Rape Trial and Investigation Act 2021 related to the incidents of gang rape and sexual abuse of girls in the province. The court expressed concern over the increasing incidents of rape cases in the province. Petitioner Tariq Mansoor Advocate took a stand that more than 2 thousand cases of rape of women and children have been reported in Sindh in a few months. From January 2023 to April, 771 rape cases including 142 children have been reported. Committees for the rehabilitation of victims and protection of witnesses have not been formed yet. A list of more than 200 affected women has been submitted.

The petitioner told the court that the conviction rate in rape cases is 10/12 percent due to poor investigation process. A police reform law was also made, but it was also not implemented. Since 20 months, the government is not submitting the answer. Special investigation units of the police were to be formed. A woman police officer is not appointed even as an investigation officer. Incidents are happening daily due to non-compliance with the law.

Expressing indignation over not submitting a written reply in the most important case, the court called for a written reply from the Federal Ministry of Law and Justice, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and the Interior Department of Sindh and others and said that the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Secretary of Law and Justice and the If the admission does not submit the answer, appear in person at the next hearing. The court has asked the parties to respond on November 30.
