Loneliness doubles cancer risk, study finds

Washington: People who live alone have a higher risk of dying from cancer, a new study has warned.

American Cancer Society researchers report that adults who live alone have a 43 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than those who live with others. Men have a 38 percent higher risk, while single women have a 30 percent higher risk.

Adults aged 45 to 64 included in the data had a 43 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than those living with others.

Researchers used data from 1998 to 2019 on more than 473,000 adults from the US National Health Interview Survey linked to the National Death Index. Data were followed for 22 years to calculate the association between living alone and cancer death.

Study author and American Cancer Society principal research scientist Hyunjung Lee said studies have shown a link between living alone and cancer deaths, and the results are gender-specific.

Findings from this study highlight the problem of loneliness in the general population and cancer survivors and call for measures to reduce the negative effects of loneliness and social isolation, they said in the news release. are
