Australia's first win in the World Cup, Sri Lanka's third defeat in a row

Lucknow: After defeating Sri Lanka by 5 wickets, Australia got their first win in the World Cup.

In the 14th match of the World Cup 2023 played at the Lucknow Stadium, Australia achieved Sri Lanka’s target of 210 runs in 35.2 overs for the loss of five wickets. Australia’s Adam Zampa was named man of the match for his brilliant bowling. He took 4 wickets for 45 runs in eight overs.

After winning the match against Sri Lanka, Australia moved from 10th to 8th position in the points table while Sri Lanka moved from 8th to 9th position. The Netherlands is in tenth place.

In the points table, India is first, New Zealand second, South Africa third and Pakistan fourth. England, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are ranked fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Australia’s innings:

Australia got off to a disappointing start in chasing the target and lost two wickets in the fourth over for a total score of 24 runs.

In the fourth over, Dilshan Madhushanaka showed the way to the pavilion by LBWing two Australian batsmen on a total score of 24 runs. David Warner was out for 11 and Steven Smith for zero.

In the fifteenth over, Mitchell Marsh was run out after scoring 52 runs on a total score of 81. In the 29th over, with a total score of 158, Marnos Labushin scored 40 runs and was caught out by Madhav Shanaka. In the 34th over, Josh Ingles scored 58 runs and was dismissed by Donith Valalgay.

Sri Lanka’s innings:

Despite the Sri Lankan openers providing a brilliant start of 125 runs, the entire Sri Lankan team was bowled out for 209 runs in 43.3 overs. 8 Sri Lankan batsmen could not even get into double figures.

The Sri Lankan openers gave the team a 125-run start. Patham Nissan scored 61 runs, Kasal Perera scored 78 runs. Skipper and fast bowler Pat Cummins bowled David Warner to Patham Nissanka Caught while bowling Kisal Perera.

Skipper Kasal Mendes took a catch off Adam Zampa while the leg-spinner took the wicket of Sudira Samara Wickrama. Mitchell Starc guides Dhananjaya de Silva to the pavilion.

Kasal Mendis scored 9 runs, Sudira Samara Wickrama scored 8 runs, Dhananjaya de Silva scored 7 runs, Donith Velalgay scored 2 runs.

Chamika Karunaratne scored 2 runs, Mahesh Thiekshana scored 0 runs, Lahiro Kumara scored 4 runs while Dilshan Madushanka remained not out with 0 runs.

Australia’s Adam Zampa took 4 wickets, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins took 2 wickets each. Glenn Maxwell got a wicket.

During the 32.1 overs of Sri Lanka’s innings, play was halted for a while due to rain.

The match between Sri Lanka and Australia is being played in Lucknow. Both the teams have failed to win in their opening two matches.

The Sri Lankan captain, who won the toss, said that Chamika Karunaratne and Lahiro Kumara have been included in the team in place of Dasan Shanaka and Mitisha Pathirana. The Australian team did not make any changes in the playing XI.

In the first match, Lincoln Tigers were defeated by South Africa by 102 runs, while in the second match, Pakistan was defeated by 6 wickets.

Similarly, Australia was beaten by hosts India by 6 wickets in the first match while South Africa beat the Kangaroos by 134 runs in the second match.

Currently, Sri Lanka is at the 8th position and Australia is at the 10th position in the World Cup points table.
