Mexico City: During a prayer ceremony in a church in Mexico, the roof collapsed and more than 60 people were buried under the debris, 9 of whom died on the spot.
According to the World News Agency, the roof of a church in Mexico collapsed when more than 100 people were participating in a prayer ceremony. Priests, women and children are among those buried under the debris.
According to the police, the preliminary investigation seems that this incident is not a terrorist incident, but the roof of the church building collapsed due to structural failure.
During the relief work, 9 bodies were removed from the debris of the roof, while around 50 injured were transferred to the hospital, where the death toll is expected to increase due to the condition of 4 injured.
The spokesman of the city government says that the National Guard, Police, Civil Defense and Red Cross personnel participated in the relief operations. Rescue personnel crawled under the pillars in the rubble to reach the injured.
The spokesman further said that the rescue operation had to be slowed down due to the fear of the rest of the church collapsing. Citizens also participated in the relief work and tried to reach the injured by removing the debris with the help of large pieces of wood.
