New York: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that Pakistan is responsible for less than 1 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, but it has to suffer 15 times more disasters as a result of climate change.

According to the World News Agency, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has urged the international community to provide assistance to Pakistan in its recovery from last year’s devastating floods.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Antonio Guterres described Pakistan as the “litmus test for climate justice” despite contributing less to climate change.

Antonio Guterres added that Pakistan is a double victim of climate chaos and our outdated and unfair global financial system that prevents middle-income countries from accessing much-needed resources for investment.

The UN Secretary General lamented that the majority of aid given by rich countries after the floods was in the form of loans. The flood-ravaged Pakistani people are still waiting for funds.

Antonio Guterres further stated that only 69% of the financial assistance target for Pakistan’s flood victims was achieved. He also demanded the international forces to provide the announced aid to Pakistan.

It should be remembered that last year floods in Pakistan were caused by record monsoon rains and melting of glaciers. Between June and November, a total of more than 1,700 people were killed and 2 million homes were destroyed, pushing nearly 9 million people below the poverty line.
