Gaza: 4 more tombs discovered in ancient Roman cemetery

Palestinian archaeologists have discovered four more 2,000-year-old tombs in an ancient Roman cemetery in the Gaza Strip..

According to international media reports, the Director General of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Gaza, Jamal Abu Ridah, said that field research efforts inside the ancient Roman cemetery by Palestinian and French archaeologists are still ongoing. In which ancient historical and archaeological treasures found in different parts of the Gaza Strip have been discovered

According to the ministry, the number of graves discovered at the archaeological site from these four tombs has increased to 134, covering an area of ​​about 4,000 square meters.

The ministry added that this ancient Roman cemetery is currently recognized as the largest cemetery found in Gaza. Palestinian archaeologist Fazal al-Otool reported that the site is currently undergoing a comprehensive process of thorough examination, restoration and maintenance.

They also confirmed the discovery of two lead caskets, one of which is decorated with motifs depicting the grape harvest while the other displays designs of dolphins and pyramids. Other finds include fragments of pottery and metal artefacts associated with Roman funerary practices.
