PTI Secretary General Asad Umar while holding a news conference in Lahore on Tuesday demanded to give the date of election and said that otherwise he will take all possible steps to defend the constitution. PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry and PTI Central Punjab General Secretary Hamad Azhar were also present with Asad Umar.
Asad Umar claimed that the coalition government was running away from the polls and violating the constitution to avoid facing PTI chairman Imran Khan in the polls. He said that legal experts have said that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) may face severe punishment by arresting him for not fulfilling his constitutional duty.
He criticized the Election Commission for not announcing the date of the election after the Lahore High Court ordered the Punjab Assembly elections within 90 days. He accused the coalition government of avoiding elections to prevent PTI’s Imran Khan from returning to power.
Secretary General PTI said that four days have passed since the decision of the Lahore High Court for the Punjab Assembly elections was issued, but no progress has been made so far and it has not been implemented. He pointed out that the ECP held a meeting with the Governor of Punjab after four days but it ended without giving the date. The whole nation was seeing that the coalition government was running away from the elections. He claimed that imported rulers and allies are making all efforts to ensure that they do not face PTI Chairman Imran Khan in the elections in violation of the Constitution.
Talking to the media, he said that Pakistan is currently facing a constitutional crisis due to the reluctance of the coalition government to hold elections, as the imputed rulers fear that Imran Khan will return to power and the people of the government. Also know that he is the most popular leader.
Asad Umar said that legal experts are also of the opinion that ECP is openly violating the constitution by not playing its constitutional role. “According to a legal expert, the Chief Election Commissioner may face arrest and severe punishment for failing to fulfill his constitutional duty.” He said that violation of the constitution is tantamount to treason. “Therefore, it was imperative that the Election Commission follow the orders of the Lahore High Court and announce the date of the elections immediately.”
He expressed hope that on Thursday the Peshawar High Court will also issue orders to the Governor to hold immediate elections in the province. We will not allow the government to deprive the people of their democratic right to elect their representatives. If attempted, Tehreek-e-Insaf will start a nationwide protest movement.
On this occasion, Fawad Chaudhry accused PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz of running an anti-judiciary campaign on social media and it seems that Maryam Nawaz was leading this campaign.
Fawad Chaudhry said that ‘there is a deliberate attempt (by the rulers) to target the judiciary by seeing their NROs (Amnesty) as a threat from the High Courts. He further said that pressure is being put on the judiciary to change its stand. The PTI leader said that the country is currently facing a constitutional crisis after the Election Commission’s reluctance to hold elections on time and the government’s failure to comply with court orders related to human rights violations.
He reminded the judiciary that its job is only to protect the rights of the people and it should not remain silent on these matters. Fawad Chaudhry also demanded legal action against the Chief Election Commissioner and Governors of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for not holding the election. He also requested President Arif Alvi to initiate constitutional proceedings against the governors for flagrant violation of the constitution.
On the ‘Jail Bharu’ movement, he revealed that the registration process has been completed and the movement can be launched at 24 hours’ notice while all major leaders are ready to go to jail.
Talking to the media, Hammad Azhar condemned the government’s actions against former federal finance minister Shaukat Tareen and said, “What was Tareen’s crime that a case of treason was registered against him?”
