'Golden egg' discovered near underwater reef in Alaska

Ocean Exploration researchers have found a mysterious ‘golden egg’-like object while diving near an underwater reef in the Gulf of Alaska.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported the unique discovery on its official website. The dome-shaped specimen of smooth gold, a little more than 10 centimeters in diameter, was firmly attached to a rock, the institute said.

Scientists were surprised by its appearance after the cameras zoomed in, the agency added. Expedition coordinator Sam Candio said the deep sea is a collection of wonders. We have not yet been able to identify it beyond the fact that it is a biological object.

“We won’t know much about it until we get it to a lab where we can examine it with the collective expertise of the scientific community and more sophisticated equipment,” he added.

Candio also noted that it is still unclear whether the tiny golden dome belongs to a known species, a new species, or perhaps represents an unknown life stage of the current one.
