Bilal Lashari, director of Geo Films' 'The Legend of Moolah Jat', joins the selection committee for the Academy Awards.


The Pakistani Academy Selection Committee has announced its new members for the selection of films from Pakistan for the Academy (Oscar) Awards.

Bilal Lashari, director of Geo Films’ presentation ‘The Legend of Moolah Jat’, is also a part of the selection committee.

Pakistan Academy Selection Committee Chairman Muhammad Ali Naqvi has announced his team for the 96th Academy Awards which will select Pakistani films for the Best Foreign Language Film category for the upcoming Oscars.

The committee includes the best and most successful personalities of Pakistani cinema, including Chairman Muhammad Ali Naqvi, Director Bilal Lashari of Geo Films’ “The Legend of Mulajt”, actor Fawad Khan, actor Ahmed Ali Akbar, writer Fatima Bhutto, social activist Fareeha. Altaf and documentary filmmaker Madeeha Syed among others.

Chairman of the Committee
The newly elected chairman of the committee, Muhammad Ali Naqvi, is a member of the Naqvi Academy of Motion Pictures and Television Academy and brings with him a legacy of impactful storytelling. He produced the Netflix Original Top 10 docu-series Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror. His latest film The Accused: Damned Or Devoted? Currently up for a Primetime Emmy, Naqvi has produced fiction features in addition to non-fiction.

Bilal Lashari:
Bilal Lashari is an award-winning director and cinematographer, his directorial debut The Legend of Moolah Jat set new records of success.

‘The Legend of Moolah Jat’ is a masterpiece by Geo Films, Encyclo Media and Lashari Films.

The recent blockbuster The Legend of Moolah Jat is the highest-grossing Punjabi-language film of all time and the highest-grossing film in Pakistan.

Ahmed Ali Akbar
Ahmed Ali Akbar is a talented Pakistani actor who is known for his brilliant performances in popular productions like Lal Kabotar and Parizaad.

He has a background in tennis, singing and theater, including a stint at Shakespeare’s Globe in London (UK) and has received numerous accolades from the Luxe Style Awards to international film festivals.

Fatima Bhutto:
Fatima Bhutto is an acclaimed author of both fiction and non-fiction, including the Bayley Prize-winning shortlist The Shadow of the Crescent Moon and the memoir Songs of Blood and Sword. Often addresses and discusses issues of justice, culture and climate.

Fawad Khan
Fawad Khan is a versatile film and TV actor, singer and model, popular on both sides of the border. He shot to fame in 2007 with ‘For God’s sake’.

Won the Luxe Style Awards. He won the Filmfare Award for ‘Humsafar’ and ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’ and for Best Male Debut with ‘Khoobsurat’.

He is playing the lead role in Pakistan’s highest-grossing film Moolah Jat.

Fareeha Altaf:
Fariha Altaf is Pakistan’s premier event manager and director, with over 3,500 shows under her catwalk banner including Lux Style Awards, Pakistan Fashion & Max, UN Pakistani Film Festivals. Fareeha is a tireless activist who advocates against child sexual exploitation and gender equality.

Hi Fatima Iqbal:
Filmmaker Educator and co-founder of the Documentary Association of Pakistan, Haya Fatima Iqbal, whose previous films include the Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning ‘A Girl in the River’ and the Emmy-winning ‘Armed with Faith’.

Madiha Syed:
Madeeha Syed is an award-winning Pakistani documentary filmmaker, investigative journalist, and cultural critic whose influential films are included in media and gender studies curricula at local universities. She has also served as a jury member for Lux Style Awards 7 times.

Mehreen Jabar:
Mehreen Jabbar is a critically acclaimed director, producer and editor with over two decades of experience and has received numerous awards for her work.

His catalog of directorial work includes two feature films, numerous TV and streaming series, shorts and corporate videos.

Nadia Afghan:
Nadia Afgan is an experienced actor, director and producer in Pakistan’s TV and film industry for over two decades. He is known for his award-winning work in films like Kabuli Palau, Sanu Chanda, Prizaad and Manto.

Saeem Sadiq:
Writer/director Saeem Sadiq, named one of Variety’s directors Zoo Watch, directed the Cannes Jury Award-winning ‘Joyland’, which was also shortlisted for the Academy Awards. Earlier, his short film Darling won the Best Short Film Award at the 76th Venice Film Festival.

Over the next month, the committee will review the eligible films and select the films that best represent Pakistani cinema. The selected film will be presented at the Academy Awards for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category.
