32 percent of children across Pakistan and 44 percent in Sindh are out of school, the report said

Karachi: Effective measures are being taken for the educational revolution all over the world, but the literacy rate in Pakistan has reached only 62.8% from 62.4% with a slight increase and in Sindh this rate is 61.8%.

According to Express, in order to move towards a literate and sustainable society and to enlighten the society with knowledge, the day is being celebrated today with the title of promoting literacy in Pakistan like the rest of the world, with the aim of educating millions of illiterate people around the world. According to the Pakistan Economic Survey, the literacy rate in Pakistan is 62.4 percent while the literacy rate in Sindh province is 61.8 percent. Out of them, the rate of women is 37 percent and the rate of men is 27 percent, in which the main reason is that the economic conditions are not improving.

In this regard, Director Non-Formal Education Sindh Aftab Ahmad Sheikh while talking to Express in his office said that the literacy rate in Pakistan is low due to lack of awareness and resources. Most of the time parents do not have resources due to which children cannot get education on time, they grow old or do not have money to get education.

He said that there is no need to worry if someone’s time has passed, those children can study in the non-formal education system. There are two systems for education, a formal school system and an informal education system. There is a non-formal education system in which children who cannot study on time are taught under a specialized curriculum.

Aftab Ahmad Shaikh said that with the help of NGOs, private sector partnership, 5 years of education can be obtained non-formally in specialized curriculum in two and a half years, the speed of non-formal education is faster. 64 thousand children in different places are studying under formal education system while 10.2 million children are studying in formal school system and education of 4 million children needs special attention.

Aftab Shaikh further said that education needs to be a service rather than a business, for which there is a need for social responsibility as well as government institutions.

The decision of the education department to conduct door-to-door campaign

In this context, the education department has decided to conduct a house-to-house campaign to promote the literacy rate. The Education Minister has written a letter to the directors of all the regions instructing them to be a part of this campaign. The Education Department advised all Directors of School Education Departments to lead and organize parent involvement activities for out-of-school children in the respective areas.

These activities need to serve as an opportunity to communicate the importance and objectives of World Literacy Day, which we are celebrating on September 8, 2023. By adopting this proactive approach, we can ensure that no child is left behind and every child has the opportunity to receive a quality education, he wrote in the letter. Local education authorities, teachers and community leaders need to be effectively involved in out-of-school enrollment campaigns.

Additional Director Registration Private Institutions Rafia Mallah advised the principals of the schools to celebrate the International Literacy Day and also directed them to conduct a five-minute interactive session with the students in the morning assembly highlighting the importance of literacy. .
